A day trip to Edinburgh

Today we had a little family jaunt up to Bonny Scotland (minus the Father as he was hard at work)

Its years since I last visited Edinburgh! We started with a mooch about the 'Old Town' where, down a side street, I was taken aback when I laid eyes on a very unusual looking lady standing in the doorway of a fortune telling shop.

I actually gasped out loud when I heard her speak and saw her move because I had noticed her out of the corner of my eye but thought she was a mannequin!

Having googled her once home I have discovered that this lady is named Elaine Davidson and is in fact THE most pierced lady in the whole world! Check out the vid I found on Youtube.

We stopped for yummy hot chocolate at 'Chocolate Soup' on Rose Street, and had a peek at The Heart of Midlothian- a heart shaped mosaic built into the pavement on The Royal Mile.

As I tried to take a picture of this I noticed a few passers by spitting on the heart, gross I thought.

My sister then explained that a tolbooth (prison) stood on the site at one time, where executions used to take place.

The heart marks its doorway: the point of public execution. Although now sometimes said to be for good luck, spitting here was originally simply a sign of historic disdain for the former prison.

A popular legend says that by spitting on the heart, one is destined to return to Edinburgh one day.

I do hope to return but couldn't find it in me to spit in public, ewwww.

We headed over to the 'New Town' where we grabbed some lunch and sought shelter from the obligatory Scottish rain, I sampled a Buffalo burger at GBK (yes made from actual buffalo) which was surprisingly nice!

On the way back to the station I noticed a poster in a takeaway for another unusual delicacy which I am yet to sample..battered mars bar...hmm... not sure about that!
